Why every night is different

No Two Nights Look the Same

The sky changes every night. The stars shift with the seasons and turn slowly through the hours, and the moon goes from new to full and back again about once a month. So the sky on the night you were born, or the night you got married, only looked that way for a few hours, over that one place.

Choose the stars and you'll see a star map of the exact sky above your place, with the constellations where they really were, worked out from real astronomical data. Choose the moon and you'll see its exact phase that night, how much of it was lit and how many days old it was, shown using NASA photographs of the lunar surface.

Most people start with a date that means something: a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, the night they met someone or the night they lost someone. If you'd like to know more first, read about what the night sky looked like when you were born, or find out what moon phase it was.
